Technical Abstract: A multi-year field study was conducted to compare resistant Carolina Cayenne and susceptible PA-136 pepper genotypes as rotational crops for managing Meloidogyne incognita (Mi) in California Wonder and Keystone Resistant Giant bell pepper plantings. In 1994, large plots were planted with either Carolina Cayenne or PA-136. In 1995, Carolina Cayenne, California Wonder, and Keystone Resistant Giant were grown as subplots in the original Carolina Cayenne or PA-136 plots. Root galling and nematode reproduction were limited in Carolina Cayenne, whether grown in Carolina Cayenne or PA-136 main plots; fruit yields were similar when grown in either main plot. Root galling of California Wonder and Keystone Resistant Giant was significantly reduced and yields significantly increased when these cultivars were grown in rotation with Carolina Cayenne as compared to rotation with PA-136. Resistant pepper cultivars should be considered a potentially useful rotation crop for management of Mi in susceptible vegetable crops.
