Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A cell line derived from embryonic tissues of Ostrinia nubilalis (OnE) was established in ExCell 401 medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum. The cells grew in suspension, and were mainly spherical in morphology. The cell doubling time at the 17th passage was 56 h. Identification using DNA amplification fingerprinting (DAF) showed that the DNA profile of OnE was different from that of Diatraea grandiosella (DgE) and Helicoverpa zea (BCIRL-HZ-AM1). Treatments of 20-hydroxyecdysone and ecdysone agonists tebufenozide and methoxyfenozide on the OnE caused cell clumping and decreased cell proliferation. The concentrations of 20-hydroxyecdysone, tebufenozide and methoxyfenozide that inhibits 50% of cell proliferation compared to the control (EC50) were 22.50, 1.99, and 0.63 nM, respectively.
