Technical Abstract: This special volume of Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology summarizes the results of the Second International Swine CD (cluster of differentiation) workshop that was conducted from 1993 to 1996. The Veterinary Immunology Committee of the International Union of the Immunological Societies funded this international workshop. This international workshop analyzed the reactivity of a panel of 191 monoclonal antibodies with swine immune cells. Scientists from all over the world tested these antibodies for reactivity on specific swine cell subsets: the T-cell/ activation subset, the B-cell subset, the myeloid group, and the null-cell panel. Others analyzed for reactivity with adhesion molecules, CD44/CD45 antigens, and molecular weights as well as for cross-reactions on cells and tissues from other species. Detailed clustering analyses and epitope studies were performed by members of the subset groups with separate panels of mAb. At the workshop meeting in July, 1995, the data was summarized and discussed. With this workshop participants enhanced the international standard for porcine immunology and decided on standard nomenclature for porcine CD antigens. A total of 16 monoclonal antibodies were recognized as reactive with existing CD antigens and more importantly 13 monoclonal antibodies were designated as reactive with new swine CD antigens. Another 6 monoclonal antibodies were determined to be reactive with previously defined or new swine workshop cluster (SWC) antigens. The workshop served as a further step in setting the scientific basis for common work on the immune system of swine.
