Because of interest in the possible adverse affects of calcium supplementation on zinc absorption, this letter provides observations from a metabolic study at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center on the effect of added calcium on zinc balance. In a 2 X 2 factorial study of the effects of dietary calcium and manganese on calcium and manganese balance, 14 young adult women (age 27 +/- 7 y) consumed diets containing 10.8 mg zinc and 587 mg calcium daily. Zinc balance was determined during the last 12 d of 39-d controlled diets periods. Zinc balance was not significantly affected when the diets were supplemented with 750 mg calcium as calcium lactate. Current absorption and balance data do not support public advice for users of calcium supplements to also supplement with zinc. |
