Title: B-CARYOPHYLLENE DERIVATIVES FROM THE WILD COTTONS GOSSYPIUM ARMOURIANUM KEARN., G. HARKNESSII BRANDG., AND G. TURNERI FRYX.

Interpretive Summary: Low molecular weight volatile compounds are involved in attracting Heliothis to cotton, as well as certain insect predators. These compounds may also be involved in disease resistance. During a survey of wild cotton species, we observed two unique major volatile compounds. We have now identified these compounds as 12-hydroxy-B-caryophyllene and 12-hydroxy-B-caryophyllene acetate. This is the first report of these compounds in nature.

Technical Abstract: 12-Hydroxy-B-caryophyllene, 12-hydroxy-B-caryophyllene acetate, and 12-hydroxy-B-caryophyllene-4,5-oxide acetate were purified from the essential oil of the wild cottons Gossypium armourianum Kearn., G. harknessii Brandg., and G. turneri Fryx. by preparative gas chromatography and identified using NMR and mass spectroscopy. In chloroform solution, the first two compounds exist as two slowly interconverting conformers as does B-caryophyllene.
