Technical Abstract: Doubled-haploid (DH) line development in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. Italica Group) using anther or microspore culture has become a standard component of most broccoli breeding programs. It has been suggested previously that fertile DH regenerants are poor seed producers, limiting their usefulness as inbreds per se or parents of hybrids. The objective of this research was to conduct self and cross pollinations and compare seed set of fertile DH and pedigree-selected broccoli inbreds derived from the same F1 hybrids. Anther culture of hybrids including Marathon, Everest, HiSierra, and Futura was conducted in 1994, 1995, and 1996, and 51,69, and 65 percent of DHs (diploids) regenerated in the respective years produced seed on selfing. Superior DH lines were identified in field trials and selfed-seed yield on these lines did not differ significantly from pedigree-selected F4(1995) and F5(1996) lines. In addition, paired tests of DH and traditional inbreds in crosses with common females or males showed similar seed production using the different types of inbreds. Results indicate that when a breeder selects for good broccoli phenotypes among DH lines, he may indirectly select lines with good seed production.
