Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A comparison of the proteins from the saliva, salivary glands and hemolymph of potato leafhoppers was conducted in order to further our understanding of the salivary components that are involved in leafhopper feeding. Proteins, obtained from salivary glands, hemolymph and fed-upon artificial diet, were separated by charge and size using standard electrophoretic techniques. Several denatured proteins, in the molecular range of 40kDa t 65kDa were found in the saliva that were not present in the salivary gland and hemolymph materials. These were acidic proteins are were prominent in the saliva material. The 15 amino acid N-terminal sequence of one of the unique saliva proteins showed 26.7-71.4% homologies with only 6 known proteins. This information will prove valuable in understanding the molecular mechanism of hopperburn on several crops.
