Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: It is important to convert vegetable oils and animal fats into value-added industrial products. There are many target products and industrial opportunities known. One of such products is oxygenated fatty acid. Oxygenated fatty acids can be used for lubricants, cosmetics, coatings, detergents, surfactants, flavors, polymers, intermediates for chemical synthesis and physiologically active substances. We have identified microbial systems which produced 10-hydroxy and 10-ketostearic acids at greater than 90% yields and discovered the production of two new compounds 7,10 dihydroxy- and 12,13,17 trihydroxy unsaturated fatty acids. These two new compounds showed antimicrobial activities.
