Interpretive Summary: Scale insects are important pests in agricultural systems particularly on fruit trees, woody ornamentals, and in greenhouses. Their names serve as critical labels that are the key to finding information about particular insects. If the names are incorrect, they will lead to erroneous information. The purpose of this paper is to correct the names of certain mealybug, soft scale, and felt scale species so that correct information can be located about them. This information is important to quarantine programs, agricultural research initiatives, and integrated pest management projects.

Technical Abstract: Catalogues of soft scale insects (Coccidae), felt scales (Eriococcidae), and mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) are being placed on the World Wide Web. Before these data are made available, several nomenclatural changes must be validated in print.
