Interpretive Summary: Refereed publications are the primary legacy left by a profession. This article is an editorial emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards for a professional society (American Society of Agricultural Engineers) for its peer-reviewed journals. The need for thorough and challenging peer reviews is highlighted along with discussions of the purposes of peer reviews and characteristics of "good" peer reviews. ASAE members were encouraged to become active participants in the peer review process.

Technical Abstract: ASAE (American Society of Agricultural Engineers) is often judged by our peers and our members by the quality of our peer-reviewed, refereed journals. This article is an editorial intended to foster the professional appreciation for our journals, to improve the quality of our peer reviews, and to provide reviewers with a brief list of expected items in their reviews. Peer reviews assist the editor in deciding the merit of publishing a manuscript, provide guidance to the author on improving their manuscript, and safe guards the profession by promoting only the highest science and engineering. Reviews should be critical evaluations, promptly completed, constructive, fair and impartial, diplomatic, and complete. All ASAE members were encouraged to become active participants in the ASAE peer-review process.
