Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Spatial and seasonal variation in crop yield must be known and evaluated before attempting to develop site-specific management practices made possible by global positioning and real-time control technologies associated with precision agriculture. Our objective was to examine crop yield and nitrogen (N) removal data collected for 1992 through 1995 from fields with Typic Haplaquolls and Typic Hapludolls located in a central Iowa, USA watershed. Corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) yield, relative yield, grain N concentrations, and annual N removal are evaluated according to soil map unit. Relationships with seasonal rainfall patterns, N fertilizer rates and selected biological, chemical and physical indicators of soil quality are discussed.
