Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biodegradable starch based materials are attractive candidates for replacement of non-degradable petroleum based plastics in single use packaging applications but suffer from poor moisture resistance. Temporary water resistance was achieved by coating starch films and foams with biodegradable polymers such as natural resins, synthetic and natural polyesters and polysaccharide derivatives. Water vapor permeability and adhesive strength of the coatings on starch will be reported. Coating methods such as solution, film and coextrusion techniques will be compared. Applications of coated articles such as starch foam plates and agricultural mulch film will also be discussed.
