Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fields that have been in soybeans (Glycine max L.) are at a great risk for erosion after harvest. An oat (Avena sativa L.) cover crop has the potential to reduce soil erosion following soybean when overseeded in late summer. There is a concern that yields of both soybeans and the subsequent corn crop will be reduced by the oat cover crop. A study was conducted from 1991 to 1996 to examine the effect of the oat cover crop on soybean and corn yields. Overseeding oats into soybeans resulted in no significant difference in soybean yields in all but one year of the study. The corn yields in the subsequent season were significantly different. The accumulation of dry matter by the oats will also be discussed.
