Technical Abstract: At planting treatments containing mixtures of clomazone and imazapyr with atrazine and clomazone with sulfentrazone were compared to atrazine alone at 2.2 kg ai/ha (no control) and standard applications of metribuzin and terbacil for the control of bermudagrass during subsequent plant-cane growing seasons. Bermudagrass covered 82% (1993) and 85% (1994) of the plant-cane crop's row top in late May when only atrazine was applied at planting. Bermudagrass cover with at planting applications of metribuzin at 2.6 kg ai/ha and terbacil at 1.6 kg ai/ha was slightly lower (58%) than the atrazine-only treatment in 1993, but similar (80%) in 1994. Clomazone at 1.1 kg ai/ha reduced bermudagrass cover in 1993 to 28 and 39% when applied in mixture with atrazine and sulfentrazone, respectively; in 1994, only the clomazone plus atrazine mixture provided some (30%) reduction in bermudagrass cover. Bermudagrass cover following applications of clomazone eat 2.2 kg/ha with atrazine or sulfentrazone was reduced in late May to 6% in 1993 and 52% in 1994. Applications of imazapyr at 0.3 kg ai/ha controlled bermudagrass the following spring at levels equivalent to clomazone at 1.1 kg/ha, while imazapyr at 0.6 kg/ha controlled bermudagrass at levels equivalent to the 2.2 kg/ha rate of clomazone each year. Only the mixtures containing clomazone at 2.2 kg/ha or imazapyr at 0.6 kg/ha increased (11%) sugar yields.
