Elkhorn was designated as ND8933 and is an F3-derived line from the cross 'Norstar'/4/'Centurk'//'Winoka'/'Uljanovka' /3/SD76694 made in 1984 by D.Cox. Elkhorn is mid-maturity, similar to 'Seward', and conventional height, similar to 'Roughrider'. Winter hardiness of Elkhorn is intermediate between Roughrider and Seward. Straw strength is similar to Roughrider and weaker than Seward. In 24 North Dakota trials from 1991 through 1994, Elkhorn averaged 4% greater grain yield than Seward, 7% greater than 'Arapahoe', and 12% greater than Roughrider. Elkhorn was tested in the Northern Regional Performance Nursery from 1992-1994. Elkhorn has shown greenhouse seedling and adult plant field resistance, with a trace mixture of susceptible plants, to the prevalent stem rust (Puccinia graminis Pers.: f. sp. tritici Eriks. and Henn.) races Pgt-QCCJ and -TPMK. Elkhorn is moderately susceptible to prevalent races of leaf rust (caused by Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm. f. sp. tritici), but is more resistant than Roughrider or Seward. Elkhorn has displayed moderately susceptible reactions to tan spot [caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Dred.) Drechs.]. Elkhorn has good grain quality. Average test weight is equivalent to Roughrider, and higher than Seward. Wheat protein content, flour extraction and wet gluten are mid-range between Roughrider (higherprotein) and Seward (lower protein). Dough mixing properties of Elkhornare rated as good, better than Seward and equivalent to Roughrider. Bread baking performance also is good, performing equal to Roughrider.
