Technical Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the potential for bentazon to reduce thifensulfuron injury to soybeans. The study was established at the University of Illinois South Farm, Urbana. The soil was a Drummer silty-cl loam with a pH of 6.8 and 5.3% organic matter. Pioneer 9362 soybeans were planted 1.0 inch deep on May 22 in 30 inch rows. Treatments were arranged randomized complete blocks with 3 replications of plots 10 by 30 feet. Herbicides were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer delivering 20 gpa and equipped with 8002 flat fan nozzles. Thifensulfuron applied alone caused significant injury to soybean and injury increased as thifensulfuron rates increased. Adding bentazon to thifensulfuron reduced thifensulfuron injury regardless of bentazon rates. By thirty days after treatment soybean injur was minimal with tank mixtures of thifensulfuron and bentazon.
