Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Advances in the areas of enzymes and pretreatment technologies are necessary in order to lower the cost of fuel ethanol and chemicals production from agricultural biomass substrates. Recent developments in cellulose and hemicellulose conversion enzymology and process technology will be reviewed. Current problems of these multi-enzymes based complex processes and economic assessment will be described. Results of our endeavor to develop novel enzymes for cellulose and hemicellulose conversion will be presented. In addition, fundamental tasks and strategies for development of an industrial enzyme will be discussed.
