Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Some Midwestern six-rowed malting barley cultivars are closely related by pedigree, yet differ for malting and yield traits. In cultivar surveys, PCR-RAPD and RFLP markers have been identified that distinguish these closely related cultivars. The objective of this study was to determine if these discriminatory markers were associated with quantitative trait loci (QTL) of malting and yield traits. The PCR-RAPD markers were assigne to chromosome interval using 15 'Steptoe'/'Morex' doubled haploid lines selected for key crossovers. The RFLPs were previously mapped. Seven of eight PCR-RAPD markers mapped to intervals on or near malt quality or yield QTL. Similarly, 12 of the 13 discriminatory RFLP markers were mapped to regions linked to QTL for malt quality or agronomic performance. These results indicate that marker surveys of closely related cultivars may be an alternative method of tagging QTL in crops.
