Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: An inherent problem in collecting and preserving clonal germplasm is the authentication of cultivar names. Cultivar identification in some crops, e.g. lychee, can be very confusing. In addition to morphological descriptors, isozyme electrophoresis was utilized to identify germplasm diversity in pineapple, lychee, macadamia, rambutan and pili nut at the Hilo repository. In the lychee and rambutan collections, some accessions with identical zymotypes were found to have different names, and others have the same cultivar name but different isozyme morphology. In the less historical crops, such as macadamia and carambola, name confusion is not much of a problem. The use of isozyme, however, confirmed the narrow genetic bases in these commercial crops. In pineapple, the use of isozyme was inadequate to separate the closely related clones within groups, such as accessions within Cayenne.
