Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Humic substances were isolated from the Ao and Bh horizons of podzol soils under oak forest, and from similar soils where the forest had been removed. Exhaustive extractions used the sequence: water, sodium pyrophosphate (pyro) at pH 7, pyro at pH 10.6 and pyro/NaOH at pH 12.6. The isolates at pH 2 were passed through XAD-8 and XAD-4 resins in tandem and humic acids, fulvic acids, XAD-4 acids, hydrophobic neutrals and hydrophilic neutrals were isolated and characterized using elemental, amino acid, and sugar analyses, fluorescence, FT-IR, ESR, and CPMAS **13 C-NMR spectroscopy, enhanced chemiluminescence, MALDI MS, and sequential degradations with identifications of the digest products.
