Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Ovine lentiviruses cause disease at a high rate in U.S. flocks. Clinical disease includes dyspnea as a result of progressive interstitial pneumonia, arthritis and mastitis. Also more rarely observed are wasting and paralysis resulting from viral encephalitis. Transgenic sheep carrying a transgene consisting of the viral LTR and the envelope protein gene were produced to study the pathological consequences of env expression. Env expression was observed in appropriate tissues although additional sites of expression were also observed including lymphocytes. Pathology was not observed as a consequence of env expression. These transgenic sheep are valuable models for studies of lentiviral diseases.
