Technical Abstract: Genetic linkage maps enable scientists to identify regions of the genome that influence production related traits. Sufficient number of polymorphic markers (>1,700) are available for a genome-wide quantitative trait loci (QTL) search and subsequent use of markers for selection. Information obtained from mapping studies will improve selection strategies and help elucidate the molecular mechanisms controlling the genetic component of qualitative and quantitative traits. Proper design and analysis of mapping studies are required to increase probability of detecting QTL and avoiding false positives. Repeated studies with different populations may be needed to identify additional QTL that were not segregating in the first population before a large portion of genetic variation associated with a trait can be explained.
