Technical Abstract: Studies on interactions among plant-parasitic nematodes, plant roots and biological control agents for nematodes can help determine conditions that increase efficacy of the management agents. The fungus Verticillium lecanii has been investigated for suppression of soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines). A strain of V. lecanii was applied to soybean roots (cv. Kent, susceptible to H. glycines) in tissue culture, and the number of roots with colonized surfaces was recorded. The number of roots associated with fungus increased with root age at the time of fungus inoculation. The presence or absence of nematodes did not influence the interaction. There was a slight increase in association between roots and fungus when the fungus was added in a water suspension, as opposed to inoculation of fungus on plugs of PDA.
