Virol. 66:1409, 1992) reported that chickens vaccinated with recombinant fowlpox virus expressing Marek's disease virus (MDV) gB (rFPV0-gB) were protected against challenge with MDV. Virus-neutralizing antibodies were detected in these chickens, but the presence of gB-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTL) was not examined. We investigated the possible role of CTLs in protective immunity after vaccination with rFPV-gB. Groups of P2a (B**19 B**19) chickens were vaccinated with SB-1, rFPV-gB or FPV were left uninfected. CTLs were obtained from spleens between 5 and 14 days post inoculation (dpi) and used in chromium release assays against reticuloendotheliosis virus-transformed cell lines expressing MDV gB or pp38. CTLs specific for pp38 and gB were present in SB-1-vaccinated chickens between 5 and 14 dpi, while gB-specific CTL were present in rFPV-gB inoculated birds between 7 and 14 dpi. |
