Interpretive Summary: Mycology the study of fungi has a strong tradition at the New York Botanical Garden and has produced several scientists who have made significant accomplishments of value to the United States Department of Agriculture among other organizations. This paper is an account of the mycologists who have been closely associated with the New York Botanical Garden from the late 1800's to the present. The most significant events such as the discovery of the fungus Neurospora and the dawning of fungal genetics are reviewed. This paper will be enjoyed by mycologists as well as those interested in the history of science.

Technical Abstract: A review of the first 100 years of studies on fungi (including lichens) at The New York Botanical Garden is presented.
