Publication Type: Abstract Only Publication Acceptance Date: 5/31/1996 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Fumonisin B1 was nominated by the Food and Drug Administration to the National Toxicology Program (NPT)of the National Institute of Environmental and Health Sciences for evaluation of toxicity. The primary purpose of the study is to provide data that can be used to evaluate the threat of human exposure to FB1 in the food supply so that reasonable scientifically based levels for fumonisins in corn and corn products can be determined. There are several studies underway at the direction of the Toxicology study selection and review committee of the NTP. The main study is a three year multi level feeding study of FB1 to two animal species (rats and mice). The levels were selected with imput from preliminary 30 and 90 day studies conducted by USDA at Athens GA to show measurable effects at the highest levels and to establish a no effect level for FB1 exposure. This study started approximatly Feburary of 1995 and will run through March of 1997. In addition several other studies are underway to determine if there are any neonatal or developmental toxicities associated with fumonisin exposure and to determine the mechanisim of toxicity of fumonisins. The emphasis of this review will be from the view of a chemist, not a toxicologist and will focus on a brief review about what is known of the mechanism of fumonisin toxicity, the latest available information on the long term study and on how the studies might effect the interests of this group. |
