Technical Abstract: TRANSLATION. The objective of the present work was to assess rabbits as a model for studies on the pathogenesis of pulmonary damage seen in bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. Three studies were performed. First, rabbits were given P. haemolytica lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by endotracheal (ET), endovenous(EV), and both ET and EV routes. Pulmonary inflammation was determined by histopathology and bronchoalveolar lavage cell counts. Second, rabbits were passively immunized with P. haemolytica antiserum to assess the effects of antibody on LPS-induced pulmonary inflammation. Finally, rabbits were hyperimmunized with a P. haemolytica bacterin to assess the effects of humoral immunity on LPS- induced pulmonary inflammation. Overall, lung inflammation was the most severe when LPS was given by the ET route and inflammation was not reduced in rabbits passively immunized with antibodies to P. haemolytica or actively immunized with a P. haemolytica bacterin. Since pulmonary inflammation was induced in rabbits following ET administration of P. haemolytica LPS this may therefore be a good model for studies on the pathogenesis of LPS-induced pulmonary damage.
