Publication Type: Abstract Only Publication Acceptance Date: 5/14/1996 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Crossability between the cultivated tetraploid potato and its wild tuber-bearing relatives was analyzed using the wild species as males and females over two years. The potato species exist in a polyploid series from 2x to 6x where x=12. Pre- and post- fertilization barriers are present in these species, complicating the prediction of crossability. Stylar, ploidy and endosperm barriers have all been observed in the tuber-bearing Solanums. However, there are mechanisms by which the potato can overcome some of these barriers, such as 2n gametes and the matching of Endosperm Balance Number¿s (EBN). Results were analyzed to allow a level of predictability in determining crossability. Ploidy and EBN analysis suggest that as the ploidy and EBN of the wild species approach that of 4x(4EBN) cultivars there is an increased level of crossability, and efficiency in crossability in the absence of stylar barriers. Data is als presented in geographic form, analyzing crossability by areas of diversity for the potato (Mexico, Central and South America). This analysis allows a level of risk to be assigned to various ploidies, EBN¿s and geographical localities. |
