Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Swine immune responses to infectious agents are complex and should serve as excellent models for human infectious disease studies. As pointed out in this review the increasing availability of reagents that enable scientists to fully dissect swine immune responses means that deliberate infections can be studied in detail and the knowledge used to alleviate human diseases. This review addresses in vivo and in vitro cellular immune responses that are involved in producing protection against several important viral and parasitic infections of swine. Knowledge of effector mechanisms that induce protective responses against swine infectious diseases should enable researchers and clinicians to design better therapeutics for many infectious diseases and to develop new vaccine strategies based on developments in swine infectious diseases. Detailed designing and efficacy testing of new vaccines and of novel immunomodulators will be facilitated by the availability of these well controlled swine models. Significant efforts have been directed at determining the humoral and cellular mechanisms that swine use to overcome infections. Several recent reviews have discussed important issues in this area.
