Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Dormant season evaporation is a critical component of the hydrologic balance and can be considered as the winter period or the time in which there is not a crop actively growing. It is difficult to assess the amount of water use during this period because of the frozen soils in northern climates, small amount of water used in evaporation, and difficulties in obtaining accurate measurements of the meteorological variables required for evaporation models. Models and direct measurements can be used to assess dormant season evaporation and can improve hydrologic models.
