Title: CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID CONTENT OF MILK FROM COWS FED DIFFERENT DIETS

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Three experiments were conducted to determine the content of CLA in milk of cows grazing pasture (Expt. 1) or fed conserved forages (Expt. 2 and 3). In Expt. 1, three groups of cows grazed a permanent pasture (P) containing a mixture of grasses and legume species. During the grazing season cows in three treatment groups consumed either 1/3, 2/3, or all of their daily feed dfrom the pasture. The balance of feed for the 1/3 P and 2/3 P groups was supplied by a supplement. Milk samples were analyzed for fatty acid composition. In Expt. 2, fifty-three cows from wk 3 to 24 of lactation were fed either normal corn silage and normal high moisture ear corn (HMEC) or high oil corn silage and HOHMEC. The diets contained: alfalfa silage 27.5%, corn silage 22.5%, HMEC 31.5%, soybean meal 10%, roasted soybeans 4.6%, and blood meal 2%. After 10 wks of feeding the diets, milk samples were analyzed for fatty acid composition. In Expt. 3 forty-eight cows were assigned to four groups and were fed diets containing 55% alfalfa silage and 45% grain (CTL). In the other three treatments the CTL diet was supplemented with 3% fish meal (FM), or 12 ppm monensin (MON) or a combination of FM and MON (FM+MON). Milk samples were collected three times and were analyzed for fatty acid composition. Milk CLA contents in Expt. 1 were 8.4**c, 13.7**b, and 22.7**a mg/g fat (P = .001) in the 1/3 P, 2/3 P, and all pasture groups, respectively. The CLA contents in Expt. 2 were 3.7 and 4.0 mg /g of milk fat (P = .9) in the normal corn and high oil corn treatments, respectively. In Expt. 3, milk CLA contents were 5.3**b, 8.6**a, 6.8**ab, and 8.9**a mg /g fat (P < .05) in CTL, FM, MON, and FM+MON groups. Milk from cows grazing pasture had higher CLA content than milk from cows fed conserved diets.
