Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Good management at all phases of silage making is required in order to make high quality silages for feeding dairy cattle. This means harvesting forages at the right stage of maturity and dry matter content, sizing the silo properly, filling the silos rapidly, packing the crop adequately and sealing the silo well. Under certain circumstances, silage additives may be applied at ensiling to further enhance silage quality. This article briefly covers each of these aspects of silage making.
