Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Over 95% of row crop acres in Iowa receive a broadcast herbicide application. Banding of herbicide over the row and use of high-speed, row crop cultivation to control weeds in the row middles is proposed as a weed control system that would reduce environmental impact of herbicide use. High speed operation is necessary to assure timely cultivation of all row crop acres. A field experiment was conducted to determine effects of herbicide band width and cultivator design and operating speed on weed control and corn yield. Both yield and weed control were similar when a broadcast-herbicide application without cultivation was compared with a combination of a 15-inch wide herbicide band and cultivation with a low-profile sweep at faster than normal speed.
