Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Estimates of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects may assist in identifying parents, or specific parental combinations, which produce higher frequencies of high grain protein, high grain yield progeny. Six high grain yield parents: Seri 82, Bacanora 88, Ciano 79, Opata 85, Weaver, and Norm were crossed with six high grain protein parents: Minnpro, Chris, Grandin, Roblin, ND643, and C2-44. 25 F lines from each cross were planted at Cd. Obregon, Mexico, during the 1994 1995 growing season. Lines were blocked by cross within replications. Significant differences were found for GCA effects among parents and for SCA effects among crosses. The parent with highest GCA was Grandin (+0.713), average yield of 6 crosses 5.4 Mg/ha. The cross with highest SCA was Weaver/Minnpro (+0.566), average yield 5.9 Mg/ha. The parents of the highest yielding cross (Bacanora/Grandin, average yield 6.0 Mg/ha) also had dthe highest GCA effects in the yield and protein groups, respectively. GC and SCA effects for grain protein will also be presented. The potential usefulness of GCA and SCA estimates in selecting parents will be discussed.
