Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A protein kinase mRNA, called PKABA1 (protein kinase - abscisic acid responsive), has been identified that is expressed in mature wheat seed embryos. Application of ABA at sufficient concentrations to inhibit embryonic germination, results in the accumulation of PKABA1 mRNA. When dormant seeds are hydrated, embryonic PKABA1 transcript levels remain high for as long as the seeds are growth-arrested, while PKABA1 transcripts decline in nondormant seeds after imbibition. Similar kinase sequences to wheat PKABA1 have been identified in several other types of plants, establishing that there is a PKABA1 sub-family of protein kinases. The PKABA1 sub-family of protein kinases has the most sequence similarity to other types of protein kinases involved in responses to changes in levels of metabolites including the SNF1 protein kinases.
