Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: To successfully propagate rambutan by budding, it is necessary to have vigorous rootstocks, properly selected scions, good budding techniques, proper protection from wind, rain and sun, and an effective bud forcing method to induce bud break. This article highlights the effective procedures at the USDA/ARS, National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Hilo, Hawaii. The seeds are cleaned rapidly and efficiently by pectinase enzyme digestion; the vigorous rootstocks are produced by using high potassium formulation fertilizer with calcium and magnesium supplements; the rapid and concentrated bud break is induced by topping and defoliating of rootstock above the bud union 14 days after budding. New growths are visible within 14 to 17 days after forcing. This is superior to the current forcing method by topping alone, which could result in erratic bud break spreading over a 31 day period. Success rate for rambutan budding at the repository is over 72%.
