Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Three genes (wsm1, wsm2, and wsm3) for resistance to WSMV were identified in maize inbred Pa405 and mapped by RFLP analysis. To study the effects of these genes, NILs were developed using Pa405 as the donor parent and Oh28 as the recurrent parent. Approximately 30 cM that was delineated by the molecular markers jc1270 and umc65 on chromosome 6 containing wsm1; 50 cM from umc92 to bnl10.24 on chromosome 3 containing wsm2; and 40 cM from umc163 to bnl7.49 on chromosome 10 containing wsm3 were integrated by six generations of backcrossing and then selfing. wsm1, wsm2, and wsm3 behaved as single dominant genes (1:1 resistant:susceptible segregation in backcross progenies) when plants were airbrush-inoculated in the field. No differential reactions were observed when the NILs were rub- inoculated with five WSMV strains in the greenhouse. These NILs will be used to study the mechanism of resistance to WSMV.
