Technical Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is found worldwide and is a source of major financial loss for cattle producers. It has long been thought that isolates of bovine viral diarrhea virus are heterogeneous. Differences include variation in biotype, virulence, and antigenicity. Failure to recognize these differences can lead to diagnostic errors and ineffective vaccines. One research goal at the NADC is to find ways of grouping BVDV that have practical application for producers. In this presentation we review one way of categorizing BVDV called genotyping. Using this method we can divide BVDV into two groups. This division appears to have practical significance because viruses from these two groups differ in the severity of the diseases they cause. Further, an animal protected against infection with viruses from one group may not be protected against infection with viruses from the other group. Taking the differences between these two groups into consideration will change the way we manage animal herd health.
