Interpretive Summary: 'Noels Special', a high quality processing passion fruit clone has been lost as a germplasm for over ten years. A vine, collected by the USDA/ARS, National Clonal Germplasm Repository - Hilo staff in 1993, from Puueopaku, HI., produced fruits closely resembling the published descriptions of 'Noels Special'. Cuttings from this vine produced a small crop within 6 months after field planting and 50 fruits were evaluated. The results confirmed the earlier observations, and the passion fruit accession will be released under the cultivar name 'Noels Special'.

Technical Abstract: Clonal passion fruit accession N94-18 collected from Puueopaku, HI has been released under the old cultivar name 'Noels Special'. The original 'Noels Special' has been lost for over 10 years. N94-18 fruits resembled closely the described fruit qualities of 'Noels Special', with smooth, shiny, orange yellow exterior and dark orange pulp. Fruit weight averaged 119 g; juice recovery was 39%. Total soluble solids ranged from 13 to 15.5% and titratable acids 2.61%. Fruits from N94-18 also showed high to moderate resistance to ovipositing by oriental fruit fly and some degree of tolerance to alternaria even during a very wet winter.
