Interpretive Summary: The goal of this project is to sequence, assemble, and annotate the genome of Phormia regina, commonly known as the black blow fly. P. regina is a saprophagous blow fly with broad distribution in the Americas where it is used in forensic entomology to determine post-mortem interval (PMI). It is related to the New World screwworm and other Cochliomyia spp. and occasionally infests living animals, thus the P. regina genome could provide valuable insights into the evolution of feeding habits in the Calliphoridae. A chromosome-level reference assembly was generated by sequencing a single adult male on the PacBio Revio and scaffolding with Hi-C. RNA sequencing was conducted on an Illumina NextSeq to provide evidence for annotations using NCBI’s EGAPx pipeline.
