Technical Abstract: A study was conducted to determine whether glaucousness can contribute to increased salt tolerance of wheat. Two spring wheat glaucous-nonglaucous isolines were grown in greenhouse sand tanks under saline conditions. Saline treatments were imposed by irrigating with water that contained NaCl and CaCl2 (1:1) by wt. Electrical conductivities of the irrigation waters were 1.3, 6.4, 11.2, and 15.7 dS/m. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2, and transpiration rate were measured periodically throughout the study. Mainstem and tiller development of five select plants of each isoline were monitored continuously until plant maturation. Length, weight, spikelet number, seed number, and total seed weight of each spike from the select plants were determined at harvest. Preliminary data analysis indicates large differences in photosynthesis between isolines, but insignificant differences in growth, final yield parameters, and salt tolerance.
