Interpretive Summary: Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is a biological alternative to fumigation for soilborne pests in specialty crops. Although ASD has demonstrated efficacy against soilborne pests, grower adoption has been slower than would be expected for a proven technology. In order to determine what is keeping more growers from adopting this practice, a survey was conducted of US farmers. Growers identified a lack of knowledge to be the primary reason. Educational and extension activities and demonstrations are needed to increase grower awareness of this non-fumigant pest management tool.

Technical Abstract: Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is a biological alternative to fumigation for soilborne pests in specialty crops. A 2025 survey of U.S. specialty crop producers, guided by Rogers' diffusion of innovations theory, assessed awareness and barriers to ASD implementation. ASD adoption remains low amid significant knowledge gaps and technical challenges. Despite limited future intent, many respondents expressed interest in extension resources like demos and webinars. Targeted outreach is essential to advancing the adoption of ASD in sustainable specialty crop production.
