Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This Editorial describes the manuscripts published in the Research Topic "Metagenomic Insights into Microbial Communities in Fruits and Vegetable Plants". Two manuscripts focus on the use of high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics to identify pathogens and characterize plant viromes. Two other manuscripts describe the effect of environmental factors such as soil chemistry and nutrient availability on microbial communities in pepino and radish. The impact of microbial communities on plant pathogen interactions is explored in manuscripts on Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca on olive and Puccinia striiformis on wheat. The wide range of research applications for metagenomics is illustrated by the manuscripts included in this collection.
