The goal of this study was to identify guar breeding lines with potential use as forages for the US southern Great Plains using statistical analysis to determine each lines' adaptability and suitability. Twenty five breeding lines and five commercial cultivars were evaluated at two locations during two years. Although no breeding line was perfect for the seven forage nutritive traits, grain yield, or biomass production. Two breeding lines, on average, performed better than the five commercial cultivars. The results of this study showed that the guar breeding lines have adequate adaptability, variability, and stability to create future high yielding guar varieties with good forage nutritive values. Technical Abstract: Breeding high yielding forages with good nutritive values is difficult in semi-arid and arid locations of the world. The goal of this study was to identify guar breeding lines with potential use as forages for the US southern Great Plains using AMMI analysis and AMMI stability values (ASV). Twenty five breeding lines and five commercial cultivars were evaluated at two locations during two years. Although no genotype had an ASV of 1 (best) for grain yield, biomass production, and the seven forage nutritive value traits; two genotypes had lower ASV than the commercial controls when averaged across all traits. Within many of the individual traits, several genotypes were better than the commercial cultivars. For example, breeding line 15GFT-114 had the best ASV for biomass and seed yield production, relative forage quality (RFQ) and total digestible nutrients (TDN). The results of this study showed that the guar breeding lines have adequate adaptability, variability, and stability to create future high yielding guar varieties with good forage nutritive values. |
