DOI: https://doi.org/10.1093/amt/tsag022 Interpretive Summary: This study looked at if new tank-mix additives helped control sugarcane borers when mixed with Vantacor, the most used insecticide in Louisiana sugarcane. We looked at stalk injury from borers and crop yield for the following treatments: untreated controls, the industry standard of a commercially available seed oil (Destiny HC), a new seed oil concentrate (ORO-HSMOC), ORO-HSMOC with the plant growth stimulant (Galactek), a combination fungicide/insecticide/miticide (Prev-AM), and Prev-AM with Galactek. We studied these mixes on plant cane HoCP 14-885 and second ratoon HoCP 00-950. In both tests, plots treated with any of the mixes showed decreased sugarcane borer injury when compared to untreated controls. All of the new mixes performed just as well as the industry standard mix at reducing borer injury. But there were no differences in crop yield. Technical Abstract: This study assessed the new tank-mix additives with the standard insecticide for managing the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis). We assessed sugarcane borer injury and yield of treatments relative to that of untreated controls and as well as the industry standard of the insecticide Vantacor mixed with a commercially available methylated oil concentrate (Destiny HC). The additives evaluated in conjunction with Vantacor included: the high surfactant methylated oil concentrate ORO-HSMOC, and ORO-HSMOC with the growth stimulant Galactek, the fungicide/insecticide/miticide Prev-AM, and Prev-AM with Galactek. We assessed all treatments in plant cane HoCP 14-885 and second ratoon HoCP 00-950 at the USDA-ARS Sugarcane Research Unit Ardoyne Farm in Schriever, LA. In both tests, all treatments reduced sugarcane borer injury relative to the untreated controls. Additionally, all treatments decreased borer injury as well as the standard commercial treatment. However, these differences in injury did not result in significantly greater stalk weights, TRS, cane tonnage, or sugar yields. |
