Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Strategies for improving animal health and welfare and sustainability of beef cattle for food production will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on discovery of specific mechanisms that enable pathogens to confer disease through interaction with animal hosts. Gene editing tools can be used as defense against those key genes and mechanisms in order to increase animals' genetic resistance to pathogens and prevent viral disease transmission. Potential limitations will also be discussed.
