Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Since the 1980s, healthy dietary patterns in the U.S. have been defined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), which are developed jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This presentation explores current knowledge gaps and flexibility of healthy dietary patterns as they are described in the 2020 DGA through a discussion of 1) nutritionally adequate vegetarian eating patterns for different life stages, 2) the role of ultra-processed foods in healthy dietary patterns, and 3) Indigenous dietary patterns comprised of foods native to the Great Northern Plains. Topics that may impact healthy dietary patterns will also be discussed, especially emerging research on diet cost, food accessibility, shelf stability, and preparation time.
