These viruses can cause complete yield loss in farmer fields. The development of aggressive stem rust races in other parts of the world is a concern for U.S. producers because these races can cause severe disease on U.S. cultivars that are resistant to North American races. KS20U111616R3 is a new hard red winter wheat that addresses both of these challenges by providing highly effective resistance to both the mite-transmitted viruses and aggressive new races of stem rust. This new wheat, to be marketed as the cultivar 'Bernd,' provides a valuable option for producers of hard red winter wheat. Technical Abstract: The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service announces the release of a hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germplasm, ‘KS20U111616R3’, (Reg. no. ______, PI 707944). KS20U111616R3 is released for its outstanding resistance to field populations of Wheat streak mosaic virus and Triticum mosaic virus based on field testing in Kansas. This resistance is conferred by a shortened translocation from Thinopyrum intermedium, named ‘rec213,’ conferring the virus resistance Wsm1. Marker information indicates that KS20U111616R3 also carries Cmc4, a gene for resistance to wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella Kiefer), the vector of Wheat streak mosaic virus and Triticum mosaic virus. Plants of KS20U111616R3 have resistant seedling reactions to the ‘Ug99’ group stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici) races TTTTK, TTKSK, and TTKTT, as well as to the prevalent North America race, QFCS. The pedigree of KS20U111616R3 is (Wsm1-‘Overley’/’Fuller’, F2)//CO050270/3/CO050337-2, F2/4/’Byrd’, with the final cross made at Colorado State University. Plant Variety Protection has been requested for KS20U111616R3 with the cultivar name ‘Bernd.’ |
