Interpretive Summary: Technical abstract

Technical Abstract: Bacterial spot remains a leading yield-limiting disease in southeastern U.S. peach production. The disease has become more widespread and causes significant losses even in some so-called tolerant/resistant cultivars. Spray management is ineffective. The increasing disease incidence emphasizes our attention to the epidemiology of the disease on current-in-use cultivars. An update of bacterial spot in peaches is given in this article, including the status of genetic markers and additional thoughts on breeding for resistance to the disease. It is important to continue to develop genetic markers for resistance to bacterial spot and explore vigorous approaches to distinguishing peach resistance/susceptibility to the disease and develop cultivars with more durable resistance.
