Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The growing bioeconomy presents a tremendous opportunity to improve the sustainability, security, and economic strength of agricultural communities in the United States and around the world. The development of new and existing crops into biomass feedstocks will be crucial in building the bioeconomy. Industrial oilseed crops are of particular interest as feedstocks for producing biofuels, bioplastics, and other bioproducts in this industry. This talk will discuss some of the recent advances in utilization of new industrial oilseed crops by USDA-ARS researchers. An overview of the processing and conversion of emerging seed oils into bioproducts will be given. Practical considerations such as economic feasibility, land utilization, and local environment will be discussed. Of particular interest are crops that can be adopted without interfering with or displacing food crops. Special emphasis will be placed on new oilseed crops that can be utilized as cover crops or grown on marginal land.
